This article provides all the information needed to sign-up and join the private forums. It also details alternative methods to join and general information about the community.

1. The Chaos Engine

The Chaos Engine provides a number of public forums for anyone who's interested in games and the games industry. This site is also home to private forums for industry professionals only. If you're a troll you should try fatbabies instead. If you're a general poster but not currently working in the games industry, you're welcome to use the public forums but please don't ask for private access.

2. Access to the Private Forums

First, please note our membership rules. We don’t allow the general public, upper management, marketing, HR/recruiters or the press on the forums. The rules were carried by a membership vote in 2003 and rule of the mob wins the day.

Second, you must prove to us you work in the games industry, (development, production or retail). There are several ways you can do that which are explained below.

Lastly, set yourself up on the forums before you contact us. You may choose any user-name, it doesn’t have to be your real name. You’ll have access to the public forums, but not the private ones.

2.1. Joining: Industry Account Email

Email us from your company email account to gatekeeper (at) TheChaosEngine (dot) com This is the primary proof we need that you work in the industry, so we must know the company or there must be a valid corporate web-site at the email’s domain.

In the Email include:

Your full real name (this may well be part of the email, but you will include it anyway even as part of the sig.)
You must include your forum username.
You must include your full job title.
The following are optional, but providing them will speed up your application enormously: How long (roughly) you have been at the company you work for, any additional proof you work in the industry and don’t break the membership rules, (link to Moby Games, links to Internet/Corporate references etc.)
There is a reason for all of the above – it’s to make the life of the Admin easier. We have a lot of applications to sift through and previously the onus was on us to vet you. As we have so many applications, you must now prove to us who you are. We will still check your credentials if you don’t supply any, but the more details you give us the quicker your application will be processed.

2.2. Joining: For Freelancers/Independents

If you’re freelance or independent and therefore don’t have an email address, (or your email address is from a normal ISP or your own domain), you can still join. First, follow the normal directions above, then ask someone you know who’s in the industry to email us from an industry account. All they have to do tell us they know you work in the industry and they don’t need to be a member of TCE.

2.3. Joining: Currently out of Work

If you’re out of work, follow the directions above. Send us the standard email and ask someone you know with an industry account to prove you work in games. If you can’t do that for some reason, we have a special membership for just the private jobs forum. We can’t understand why anyone who’s unemployed can’t get someone to email us, but if you can’t at least you can get on the jobs board.

2.4. Joining: Vouching

If you know someone already on the forum, you can ask them to vouch for you. If they agree, we’ll give you access, providing you still send us the regular email with your details as above. Note that vouches also follow the normal membership rules so no general public, upper management etc.

2.5. The Last Resort

If all else fails, or even if you’re upper management, or someone who’s restricted from access on TCE you can ask for your membership to be put up to a membership vote. Give us your name and job title, and a paragraph as to why you think you should be allowed on the site. We’ll put your request on the private forums and the membership will vote on it. If they vote you in, we’ll give you access.

3. We Reserve the Right to Refuse Membership

No matter who you are, or the method you use to join TCE, we reserve the right to veto your membership. While we allow vouching and other privileges to our existing membership, the admin of TCE still act as the ‘gatekeepers’ to the forums for our entire membership, and act for the greater good on the community in all membership matters.

4. Alternative Sites for Marketing, PR and Media, and Upper Management

If you're a PR, Marketing or Media professional try the private industry forums at GIMMPS, (Games Industry Marketing & Media Professionals). Web-site: http://www.gimmps.com.
For those in upper management, publishing or the biz side of the industry, try the forums at Quarter to Three. Web-site: http://www.quartertothree.com.
