What about digital pirates? I think there are more digital pirates than there ever were sailing pirates.

I think this is a clear indication of the bias present in regards to pirates. Haven't people noticed that ninjas are also on the decline as of late? I propose launching an all-encompassing in-depth extreme five minute study by a panel of experts or random volunteers to look into the matter. I would think that the sheer awesomeness of ninjas would be more than enough to hold back a few silly hurricanes and some yawn-inducing earthquakes. Not to mention the extreme coolness factor that would lead to a global drop in temperatures. I rest my case.

 

Ninjas and pirates have both jumped the shark (itself a recursive phrase at present). Robots are still hot.

 

I would've assumed you had read a widely published recent double-blind study that found that 85% of all Japanese people are Ninjas.
