What's the point in the secrecy and being so restrictive?

Patience? Nobody has to explain me anything, if you post in this thread it's because you feel the need to do it or you wish so :)

I don't believe I've been rude to anyone on these boards. I certainly didn't call anyone here stupid, unlike you. I'm just sharing my ideas on these boards, what I've written are just my personal opinions and nothing more.

I thought telling the mods taking so long to process memberships wasn't good enough was pretty rude, as it happens. You've not paid for membership, who are you to start dictating what is "good enough"?

    Dictating? What's your problem? :)

I'm sorry but that is not rude, that is a fact. Anyway, I didn't mean any offence.

"Good enough" or "not good enough" is inherently a question of judgement. There are no facts involved.

This was my thoughts to a tee when reading the first or second post of his in this thread.
I think he's going to be horrifically disappointed if/when he gets approved.
Also what we do in secret is allow for ourselves anonymously (well those of us who choose to remain so) to have bit of a vent or express opinions that we would otherwise care to keep out of the public eye.
If this was a board like stack overflow then yes, exclusivity would be a bad thing to promote.. but this place is not that. It can be a good resource, or a good place to get pointed in the right direction but think of the TCE as more of a self help forum for game devs.

(That said if you're going to post about dumping your girlfriend watch out as it might end up being a complete cornflake bukkake session)

Oh sorry dude, we must have read your initial post without our mittens/kitten gloves on. You came across as pretty petulant, and Bitterman is right you offered up no facts just some text that read very accusingly.

    Hi there MrCranky,

    Fair enough.

Just to stop the speculation about what I imagine, all I wanted to do is to read this thread: http://www.thechaosengine.com/forum/showthread.php?p=868529#post868529

As for game development being an entirely different beast, I don't fully agree with you. I think game dev is a special case of software development and to be honest I am a bit shocked by this widely spread misconception that game programming is different from all other programming activities. There might be some particularities to game dev, but in general it's no different from other programming activities.

I would say that game dev has still a lot to learn from other areas of software development. For example, in my opinion, one of the biggest problems of the game industry (from the engineering perspective) is the lack of rigorous automated testing. No matter where you work, most games development studios don't invest in this.

Probably I would be asking a different question. What's the point?

    Take that Designers and Artists!

    He is of course correct!
Most software companies do have to create first playable demos and Vertical Slices so you can get your budget set.
They do have to go through the process of finding a mocap studio and hiring VO talent.
Pretty much all of them spend the night correcting messed up textures from the outsourcing company since it's faster than ordering it again.
I can't think of any software company that doesn't have long meetings discussing the story and gameflow.
I am certain they all have to pester the concept people for a better angle so you can build the damn statue.

This is Not a programming forum. It's a Game Development forum, which has a programming section.

BTW the front page states what the forum is pretty clearly.

It's also a pretty stupid thing to try and get access to something like this without even bothering to read up on it first *shrug*

morgolock does have access now, so this is just in-fighting.

(for anyone reading this thread who doesn't have access yet - it's not all like this inside the secret wall, but some of it is ;))

-It allows developers a certain degree of freedom to be able to post without their bosses, the media, or the public jumping down their throats or spinning their every word out of context.

-It allows developers to post without threads getting gummed up with posts like "OMG I <3 YOUR GAMES SO MUCH" or "OMG I'M GOING TO KILL YOUR DOG BECAUSE I DIDN'T LIKE YOUR LAST GAME"

-It has the effect of creating a tighter-knit community where we at all know each other, can affect help and aid, and can offer advice.

Morgolock, is clear that you had a wrong idea about what this site is about. Is not a site about game programing, 3d design or gameplay. This site is the equivalent of a bunch of game developers talking about anything at lunch time or while drinking some beers after work. They (we) will talk about pretty much anything, politics, jokes, women (or men), cats, retarded bosses, and so on. Ocasionally also about programming, but just ocasionally (at least the sane ones).

And i think is pretty obvious why anyone would prefer to keep that kind of talking somewhat private.

If you want technical information, there are much better public or semi public sites on the web.

But you are "in" now, so i guess that you already realized all that.
