    Just out of interest....

How can those that work in the marketing side of the industry be in the same boat as recruiters?

I work as a freelance Events Manager and have for the last few years been managing roadshows for a major developer. They bring out a new title, I get it a couple of months before release date to complete and then spread the love to the masses at conferences, festivals etc. For months on end, I eat, sleep and breath the same title for up to 20 hours a day. I barely makes ends meet, will never drive the car I want and don't do very well with the ladies.
I work in the games industry!

A Recruitment consultant makes his/her money from sitting in a office and wasting development managers with cold calls. Their main goals is to source "new contacts". They spend their days perfecting how to convince other that they "know what you mean", then take a skim off someones else's wage and as a result, reach the peak of their career at 21 and drive M3's.
They work in the recruitment industry!

    Am I wrong?

Hmmm actually you have a point. But I think generally our image of marketing is somewhat tainted by the fact that its is marketing and marketing bods, which often drives a lot of our excessive workload and as such can be considered a managment layer which we don't realy want to get wind of how we feel about them really.

But you make a good case and we'll have to see what others think.

    riiight!! I see.....

You'll have to forgive my ignorance but I am only privileged with witnessing the front end side of the industry. I'm aware of how much pressure there is though and I suppose it's the bods in management that push the marketing which tightens the deadlines producing outcomes that the developers would rather not.....

ohhh... its a double edged sword eh.

Although I run a team of staff when on tour, I could hardly be classed as management though. I often work along side Lead Programmers and Producers and being honest, always treat them like god. After all, I learn very little from the product managers representing the titles. I just get given a project and a deadline.

Reason for the question in the first place though is that I'm a little concerned this will halt my membership. As I am freelance, I have never possessed a work email either so i'm hanging on the fact that my youtube videos of me at work will act as some kind of proof LOL... we'll see.

The reason I wanna get in is because I want to work directly for a smaller developer and get more involved in the titles I represent. And I DON'T want to go through a recruitment consultant which seems to be my only realistic option.

    Anything else I should know?

Sadly, this is not he usual experience of developers relationship with marketing.

Just have to wait and see what the members think, but the no press, no marketing and no managment rule has been in place for some time and this board is really intended to be exclusive(with a few exceptions) to developers...I realise you're a in a slight grey area though and as I say you make a good point.

I'll depend on what the membership and mods think about this.

Some of us are dev-side. I moved around the company into marketing and, ostensibly, I'm one of the guys. I don't think of myself as being in a different department.
