Well in the case of the DS touch screen and the Wiimote there were plenty of new games possibilities being spoken of.

Nobody seems to have any for this pulse rate thing. Which includes a guy who's evangelising it.

This is because it is a one dimensional measure of something that is largely out of the player's control, namely his/her tension levels.

it'll obviously provide some interesting things, but the possibilities are no more infinite than with ANY OTHER kind of input. This is all just hype.

For example - it's all passive/subconscious/involuntary input; you cannot compare this to a touch-screen (which gives you two relatively precise axes of direct control plus a button), as it has (i'm guessing) one axis of indirect control.

sure, i'm curious as to what it'll offer, but you're talking out of your arse. in fact, you're bending over a-la-goatse and letting the loud voices of others echo around out of your gaping orifice.

    What a lame evasive non-answer.

Anyway, right about now Bruce is finding out that he's been banned from the public forum as well. Wish I could see his face.

It would be interesting to have that functionality be incorporated into the wii remote, but if you're like me and have a grip on it, I suppose that sort of just tosses that right out the window, not to mention battery life. :(

It would at least register my frustration at getting stomped on Wii Sports tennis by a 5 year old. Or else the broken remote on the ground. Either way...it'd register.

I think you could make use of the player's pulse in a sniping game.

I've done a bit of target shooting and I learned that slowing down my heart rate increased my scores. If you're good, you fire between heartbeats.

So maybe you could have a sniping game where the accuracy of shots was linked to heart rate. You could then make it harder by increasing the tension or excitement through music and so on. I reckon that could be good.

But it still sounds like quite a niche bit of hardware. It'd be more interesting if it was built into the triggers on a normal joypad, to be honest.

Obviously it'll be a perfect fit with the next version of WiiFit.

I was thinking Wii Life. Stay alive to keep the score accumulating. Table of high scores so you can see which of your friends has died. Taps into the grey casual nursing home market.

This is exactly what I expect - Nintendo imho have been extremely clever with their consoles.

They target audiences which the other console manufacturers largely ignore - this has traditionally been 'kids' (ala Mario etc.) however in recent years they've realised that 'grey gamers' actually are willing to shift a fair few units, first through 'brain training' and suchlike and now they're moving into another potential area for these customers.

This approach has been proven successful and reliable for Nintendo over the years, these consumers don't care as much about the 'cutting edge' and instead want products which are aimed at their particular sector rather than ones which have flashy graphics.

The games don't necessarily have to be fun either. I think these interactive toys are more about self-improvement and lifestyle software. It doesn't even really need to work, the marketing writes itself. E.g. The sensor reads their pulse, oxygen levels but could be random and it would still achieve good great marketing potential. "Brain training game, reads your brain", "Stress relieving marvel teaches adults how to relax", "How good are your exercise routines?".

Why would you need the heart meter for this? Wouldn't it all happen naturally?

This could actually be a very compelling idea. If they really have an application that genuinely helps you relax it could be a very big seller. Like beer.

    Some people found him irritating.

They felt unable to ignore his threads even though they were restricted to the public area.

There was some sort of 'vote' although I can't remember being asked for my vote.

So everyone loses Bruce :-( Even those who liked his posts, like me. :-(

Now Jimmy, you can read everything he was ever going to post here over at his blog if you want.

This thread in particular was taking the piss to an extraordinary degree. He posted the first paragraph of a blog he'd posted, waited for some replies, posted the second paragraph, waited for some replies and so on.

So he was pretending to have a conversation with people, but actually completely ignoring them, which is a bit rude, really.

Me, I'm glad to see the back of him. He was an embarassment.
