    For a level designer, Lego is a great design tool. I totally think that far too much emphasis is put on software to design stuff these days rather than using it to help design stuff. And Lego is way cooler that Visio, or Maya for that matter.

    Anyways Callum, FWIW I did Architecture and it's a great background to both art and design in this industry.

    Ignoring Dredge \\:D/, they're referring to the two main 3D art packages used for game content creation.

    Autodesk 3DS MAX or Autodesk Maya

    Both have a free 30 day trial.

    You can also get cheap educational licences if you can prove your student status.

    Unfortunately it is an almost even split between the two and due to the nature of game content creation many companies will only use one or the other for their entire company.

    Learning both to a competent level would no doubt impress any potential employer.

    I have a fully registered copy of maya already so im fine with that :), it seems to produce better results quicker than 3dsmax though ...
